Objectives of Presentation: This session will summarize existing evidence to inform VRE screening and control practices, including a detailed analysis of the ‘natural experiment’ that occurred in Ontario when VRE admission screening and other VRE control measures were discontinued in a proportion of Ontario Healthcare facilities. The session will also review highlights from updated Ontario PIDAC recommendations on VRE control, and provide a context for discussing evidence-informed decision making for healthcare facilities.
Biographies
Dr. Jennie Johnstone is an Infectious Diseases Physician and Physician Lead of Infection Prevention and Control at Sinai Health System in Toronto, as well as an Infection Prevention and Control Physician at Public Health Ontario. She is an Assistant Professor in Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto and at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health. Her research is focused on preventing vancomycin resistant enterococci, ventilator associated pneumonia and Clostridium difficile.
Dr. Matthew Muller is an Infectious Diseases Physician and the Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Control at St. Michael’s Hospital. He is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto in the Department of Medicine. His research interests are focused on the epidemiology and prevention of hospital-acquired infections. Dr. Muller chairs the Provincial Infectious Diseases Advisory Committee on Infection Prevention and Control.
Dr. Gary Garber is Chief of the Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) department at Public Health Ontario. In this role, Dr. Garber provides medical and scientific leadership on infection prevention and control, antimicrobial stewardship and the research direction for the PHO-IPAC team.
He is an Infectious Diseases Physician based at The Ottawa Hospital where he focuses on infections in the immune compromised host, HIV and viral Hepatitis. He currently is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and the University of Toronto.
His research has been in the appropriate use of antibiotics and novel compounds, sepsis, pathogenesis of Trichomonas vaginalis and infection prevention and control interventions to reduce nosocomial infections.
