2024 Conference – Best Oral and Poster Presentations

 

EVERY ATTENDEE MUST REGISTER INDIVIDUALLY. 

In the event that more than one participant is enrolled from one location, i.e. a group setting (several attendees in one room), the full title of the organization attending must be spelled out when that group is logging in to the webinar. 

All participants in an educational webinar must log into the webinar room with their full name.

CERTIFICATION POINTS

IPAC Canada Members can now receive an education credit towards their CIC® recertification by attending IPAC Canada educational webinars.

This is to comply with recertification requirements of the Certification Board of Infection Control (CBIC). CBIC has approved the use of a generic certificate of completion which will be available for download at the end of the webinar.

1 IPU per hour is approved for IPAC Canada webinars.

The Certificate will be available to all participants to download.

Enhancing Communication in MUHC Emergency Departments with a Monthly Infection Control Newsletter

Bueso Mvutu holds a bachelor degree of science in nursing and previously worked in hemodialysis and geriatrics. She integrated into the infection control department during the COVID pandemic at the end of 2020. Bueso is a nurse consultant in infection control for Lachine Hospital, a community hospital, and Pavillon Camille Lefebvre, a Longterm care facility in Montreal, Québec. Not only is Bueso working with different stakeholders in her facility to promote pt's safety by controlling and preventing nosocomial infections, but she also is currently involved in the modernisation of the hospital for which the construction is currently taking place.

Alexandra Hutchins holds a Bachelor's degree in Nursing from McGill University. She began working as a nurse at the MUHC in 2017, on a post-surgical unit specializing in organ transplant. Here, she got to work with a great team and with the people who inspired her to enter nursing in the first place; her sister (Kathryn) and her best friend (Andrea). In 2021, she transferred to work with another incredible team at the Oncology Day Clinic. In 2023, Alex was once again inspired by Kathryn, and took an opportunity to join her in the Infection Prevention and Control department. Since joining this welcoming team, Alex has not only been learning from the best, but finding her niche and blossoming as an Infection Control Practitioner. 

Presenter: Kathryn Hutchins holds a Bachelor's degree in Science in Nursing from Ottawa University. She worked for 6 years in post-op nursing ranging from general surgery to organ transplant. In peak pandemic, Kathryn switched to infection control. She has since been there for 3 years. She has worked in infection control at Lachine hospital, The Neurological Institute, the Glen hospital, Camille Lefebvre CHSLD and was placed in Nunavik Puvirnituq for a short time. She continues to be the chief liaison between the Nunavik ICP and the MUHC. She is also the communications officer for PCI Quebec.

Humaima AshfaqueHUMAIMA ASHFAQUE is a proud graduate of York University's Global Health Program, and has pursued additional certifications such as the IPAC (Infection Prevention and Control) certificate program with Queens University and Project Management Certification with Toronto Metropolitan University. She is currently serving as the Hand Hygiene Coordinator and Data Analyst at Hamilton Health Sciences, where she plays a pivotal role in ensuring adherence to best practices in hand hygiene—a critical aspect of infection control and patient safety.

Lauren HoringaLAUREN HORINGA is an IPAC Program Manager and has worked at the Niagara Region in this position for the past 2 years. She currently works at Linhaven, which is the largest municipally run long-term care home in Niagara. Lauren has her bachelor’s degree in public health and her master’s degree in applied gerontology. She has also successfully obtained her LTC-CIP certification this year. Lauren is a strong advocate for balancing resident quality of life with infection prevention and control measures. 

 

Laura MatthewsLAURA MATTHEWS is a registered nurse who is currently working as the Manager of Clinical Practice for the Niagara Region long-term care homes. In this role, she manages the seven IPAC program managers across the eight municipal long-term care homes. Laura has her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and her master’s degree in public health with a specialization in nursing. She has also obtained certifications for the LTC-CIP and CIC. Laura continues to look for ways to improve infection control practices in the long-term care setting through various quality improvement projects.
