It is well recognized that hand hygiene is one of the most effective measures for preventing the spread of infections within healthcare facilities. Despite this, hand hygiene compliance remains low, and infection prevention and control professionals (ICPs) are always looking for strategies to change the hand hygiene behaviors of healthcare workers (HCW). Just-in-time (JIT) coaching is one strategy that has been effective; however, this valuable on-the-spot coaching by ICPs occurs only sporadically. Considering the many opportunities for hand hygiene, ICP-led JIT

coaching isn’t providing HCW with what they need to make hand hygiene a ritual, automatic behavior—consistent, immediate feedback. Recognizing that unit leadership and frontline HCW are closest to the patient, who better to speak up and provide the immediate reminders when hand hygiene opportunities are missed? Unit-led JIT coaching may very well be the key to providing consistent, nonpunitive, on-the-spot feedback when hand hygiene noncompliance is observed.

Training unit staff (including nurse managers) to become JIT coaches takes time, and deploying this tactic in a unit takes commitment, leadership support and careful planning. But as part of an overall strategy to improve hand hygiene, unit-led JIT coaching can be the best strategy for creating a culture in which it becomes the expectation to be reminded to clean one’s hands when hand hygiene is forgotten rather than the exception. This session will help ICPs in assisting their facility to build an effective unit-led JIT coaching program. This presentation will discuss the critical steps for success including garnering leadership support, choosing the best unit to pilot the program, creating a coachable environment, important qualities and traits for choosing JIT coaches, developing metrics and goals, evaluating progress, and growing and expanding the program.


Lori Moore

Lori Moore joined GOJO in 2013 as a Clinical Application Specialist. In this position, she provided leadership and support to healthcare organizations as they implemented electronic compliance monitoring (ECM). She has been a trusted partner to hospital key stakeholders in the development, design and implementation of hand hygiene improvement efforts. Areas of expertise include root cause analysis with targeted solutions, just-in-time coaching and ECM software data analytics. In 2017, she transitioned to the position of Clinical Educator for Healthcare.

Lori Moore also continues to work as a frontline caregiver in the medical intensive care unit at the Cleveland Clinic.
