Terry Lauriks
I started as an Infection Control Professional in 2012 and joined IPAC (then CHICA) soon after. In 2014 I achieved my CIC designation and have maintained my certification since. Starting out in a small rural facility at times I was alone in my work. After immediately joining IPAC I was able to connect with more experienced members in my chapter. These connections through IPAC helped me towards CIC exam preparation, passing it on the first attempt. As I continued with IPAC I took on executive roles, making it all the way up to Chapter President. My interaction with IPAC has improved on my leadership skills, provided social connections, and increased my access to best practices on Infection Control.
Working as the construction lead in my area in Northern Alberta I am consulted on for unusual question. Once when I was in a provincial group, I was tasked with investigating the benefits of using copper plating on surfaces. Not knowing where to start I sent out an email and request for information to the other IPAC members. After a week I received more than enough information and articles on the uses of copper in health care facilities. With this information I was able to provide an informative presentation to my provincial colleagues in Alberta.
