Colette Ouellet
I joined IPAC Canada, then known as CHICA Canada, in 1996. That was a brilliant move. I became part of a large group of people with similar vocations and vast knowledge. I looked forward to going through the journal to read articles and to find the ads that helped me learn more about the products and technologies available to the Canadian healthcare system. Honestly, outside of what was available in my hospital, I had no idea what was on the market to help prevent infections. From impregnated catheters to safety needles, innovations were emerging very quickly, and suddenly I had access to information and experts that enabled me to effectively advocate in my organization to bring in these leading-edge technologies.
Beyond the expert knowledge in industry partners, my membership with IPAC Canada also provided access to experienced Infection Control Professionals. I can’t count the number of times I’ve referred to our invaluable Member Directory to find someone with particular expertise or from a specific organization to compare practices and discuss concerns. Members of IPAC Canada invariably go above and beyond to willingly share knowledge and resources to support colleagues around the corner and across the country. This was never more evident than in my first foray into becoming certified. I joined a local study group to make my learning more efficient and effective. Without the networking opportunities through my IPAC Canada chapter, I would have felt lost.
My membership in IPAC Canada has allowed me to attend annual conferences across the country. Through the jam-packed days of the conference, I have been able to meet face-to-face with people I had previously only connected with online or by telephone, and have developed long-lasting friendships that remain strong to this day. Thank you, IPAC Canada, for enhancing my journey in IPAC.
