My Journey in Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC)
I began my career in Infection Prevention and Control in 2015 as an Infection Control Practitioner (ICP), following many years as a Medical Laboratory Technologist. Transitioning into IPAC was both daunting and exciting, with many new areas of expertise to learn and master.
To build a strong foundation, I became a member of IPAC Canada and enrolled in the IPAC Canada Essentials in Infection Prevention and Control course. This educational experience equipped me with core principles that helped guide my early work as an ICP. Less than two years into my new role, I pursued and successfully achieved CIC certification through CBIC in 2017, and I’ve maintained it ever since.
The ongoing education opportunities offered by IPAC Canada—through webinars and connections to other organizations—have been critical to staying current and meeting CE requirements. These resources have been instrumental in my continued professional development.
Over the years, I’ve grown more involved with IPAC Canada in several capacities. I first served as Treasurer for SASKPIC, then expanded my involvement to roles such as Secretary for the Long-Term Care Interest Group, and as a committee member on both the Mentorship and Endorsement Review Committees. I also had the privilege of contributing to the recent review of the IPAC Canada Standards and Guidelines.
One of the most rewarding experiences has been serving on the Scientific Committee for the 2024 and 2025 IPAC Canada National Conferences. Seeing the behind-the-scenes work that goes into planning these events has given me a deeper appreciation for the field and the people in it. Attending multiple national conferences has been invaluable for both knowledge building and networking. These experiences—and the connections I’ve made—have had a profound impact on my career.
IPAC Canada has truly shaped my journey, and I am proud to give back to the organization that has given me so much.
