CARSS Update 2018

The Canadian Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (CARSS) Update 2018 has just been released.

This year’s update replaces previously reported data with the most recent antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and use (AMU) data from the different Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) surveillance systems and its national laboratory reference services.  The CARSS- Update 2018 highlights several critical areas requiring monitoring to inform research, stewardship and infection prevention and control interventions.  Most concerning is the sharp increase in CPE colonisations in the past two years in both hospitals and the community setting.  Rates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus blood stream infections remain high in pediatric hospital patients, and increasing rates of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus infections are still being seen in hospitalized patients. And while the number of antibiotic prescriptions in Canada has been stable over the past several years, there are still areas of concern.  Prescriptions for adults 60 years and older, a growing demographic, have continued to increase over time and represent the age group with the greatest use of antimicrobials. Also, please see the infographic and slide set summary of key finding
